Department of Computer Science & Engineering Computing Account Policy
Scope
The policies outlined herein, as well as future amendments, are intended to apply to current and prospective users of all computing facilities managed by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Purpose
The primary objective of user management shall be to ensure that users affiliated with the Department of Computer Science & Engineering have continuing access to, and effective use of, the department's computing facilities. Secondary objectives may be defined which do not adversely impact the primary objective.
New Accounts
New accounts on the Department of Computer Science & Engineering network shall be granted automatically under any of the following conditions:
  • The applicant is a temporary, part-time, or full-time faculty or staff member.
  • The applicant is currently enrolled in a course taught by, or affiliated with, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering
Any student who desires an account must apply to the department. No accounts shall be granted to students whose sole purpose is to use the department's e-mail and/or Internet capabilities, since these facilities are provided to all students elsewhere on campus. Any other person who has need of the department's computing facilities and will not adversely impact the staff and curricular accounts (as determined by the system administrator), shall be granted an account upon written application and approval by a faculty member of the department. The application shall contain the applicant's name, mailing address, home and work phone numbers, as well as a concise statement of why an account is needed. Approved applications will be kept on file with the system administrator until the student's account has been removed from the system. Alumni may be granted the privilege of an account upon the approval of a faculty sponsor.
Account Privileges and Limitations
Department faculty may grant or limit access to certain departmental services based on the category of account into which a user is placed. These services may include laboratory computing facilities, printers, scanners, and other peripheral hardware. In addition, disk quotas shall be imposed by the system administrator on both personal accounts and e-mail. The size of quotas shall be determined by the system administrator.
Retention of Accounts
All accounts will be retained until one or more of the following events occur:
  • The need for the account is no longer valid
  • The account has been inactive for more than 6 calendar months
  • The user knowingly abuses the account over time with the intent of doing harm to other users
  • The user requests that the account be removed
To facilitate the management and removal of accounts, the system administrator shall periodically poll various categories of users, as appropriate, in order to determine the status of accounts.
Unethical & Criminal Use of Accounts
All users of departmental computing facilities shall be subject to the computing policies stated in the Nevada Revised Statutes, the University and Community College System of Nevada Code, the UNR Student Conduct code and the Standards of Conduct for the Use of UNR Computers, as published in the latest student handbook. The department may supplement these general policies from time to time with additional policies which apply specifically to the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The Equipment and Facilities Committee of the department will review and recommend actions for dealing with reported policy violations.
Temporary Account Suspension
The system administration staff may suspend a student account on a temporary basis under any of the following conditions:
  • The account user refuses to follow instructions regarding the use of department computing facilities
  • The account was compromised
  • For reasons of account administration
