The Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno offers an in-depth, cutting-edge curriculum for those graduate students seeking the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science & Engineering. Students are involved many aspects of research, including presentations, proposal writing, and department colloquia.

Prerequisites

Students who wish to enter the Doctor of Philosophy program must possess a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in either Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

Course Requirements

To receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science & Engineering degree, all candidates must be involved in the following activities:

  • Attending colloquia
  • Writing proposals
  • Giving presentations of their research

In terms of credits, doctoral students are required to complete 72 credits of coursework beyond that of their Bachelor's degree. Of this coursework, 700-level courses must account for 30 credits, while 24 credits will be earned by the student for their dissertation.

Comprehensives
Before candidates can receive their Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science & Engineering, they must pass several comprehensive exams. The requirements for these exams is dependent upon when candidates entered the program.
