Computer science conference comes to Reno

2/19/03 - The Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM SIGCSE) will hold its annual conference at the Reno Hilton Pavilion Feb. 19-22. The Department of Computer Science at the University of Nevada, Reno was instrumental in locating this flagship conference in Reno, said Yaakov Varol, chair of computer science. "From the point of view of education and computer science, this conference is most important conference to attend," Varol said. "We make contact with our fellow computer science educators from around the world." More than 1,200 computer science professionals are expected to attend.

Technical workshops on Friday and Saturday will be held at the Engineering Computing Laboratory in Scrugham Engineering/Mines Building Room 231 on campus. Highlights include:

7-10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21: Introducing Java to High School Teachers, Richard Kick, Hinsdale Central High School.

2-5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22: Spice Up Your Classes Using Flash MX, Sandra Honda Adams and Domenick Pinto, Sacred Heart University.

7-10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22: Teaching Multithreaded Programming Made Easy Using ThreadMentor, Ching-Kuang Shene, Michigan Technological University; Steve Carr, Michigan Technological University; Jean Mayo, Michigan Technological University.
