All students at the University of Nevada, Reno are encouraged, and in some cases required, to meet with an advisor prior to enrolling in classes for each semester. The policy of the College of Engineering is that all current or prospective engineering students must meet with an advisor prior to enrolling for classes. This policy exists to make sure that students are making satisfactory progress toward their desired degree(s), to provide guidance to students to this end, and to answer any questions students may have about their general college experience. Students should feel free to visit their advisor at any point during the semester to ask questions or seek guidance, not just when required. The advisement process is different for freshmen/first-year students and all other students.
Students are asked to bring proof of advisement (a copy of the advisement form signed by a faculty member) to their Computer Science & Engineering courses at the start of each semester. Students who have not been advised are told to contact the department and make an advisement appointment. Advisement appointments can be made by visiting the departmental offices in SEM 242 or calling the Department of Computer Science & Engineering office.
Students new to the University of Nevada, Reno - including freshmen and transfer students - are advised by the College of Engineering. Students should schedule an advisement appointment by contacting the College of Engineering via one of the following methods:
More information for students in need of advisement by the College of Engineering may be found at the College of Engineering Advisement Webpage.
During their first year in engineering courses, students are expected to find an advisor within the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, whom they will consult while they pursue a degree within this field. Once students have found an advisor within the department and completed their first year of courses, they will meet with their chosen advisor instead of the College of Engineering for advisement.
All students that have completed their first year of courses at the University of Nevada, Reno and are seeking a degree offered by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering are advised every semester by a faculty advisor from the department. Students can either select an advisor to guide them toward their degree, or, if they have not chosen an advisor, must contact the department to arrange advisement with one of the available advisors. Students are free to change their advisor at any time - the choice is never final. In any case, advisement is mandatory for all Computer Science & Engineering students and must be completed with the help of a faculty member of the department.
