Hands-On Exercise

Login to MSDN-AA and purchase (no cost) a copy of Winows7 32 and 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 R2

http://ecc.blogs.unr.edu/msdnaa/

If you are installing on-campus you do not need to download them.  I will have copies of the install DVD in the lab.  Be sure to save your installation keys for future reference.  Look through the list of other software that’s available.  You may want to get copies of some of these before you graduate.

You may want to add the following to your .bashrc to make vim your default editor:

export EDITOR=vim

Or add it to /etc/bash.bashrc to make it the default for all users next time they login

Make sure your system has all the latest updates:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo reboot

Follow the instructions to install VMware Player on Ubuntu 9.04 or later

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Player

Build a Windows7 VM using the MSDN-AA media

Start -> VMware Player -> Create a New Virtual Machine

Install Windows7 32-bit without a key (this gives you a 120-day demo)

Select the option “I will install the operating system later”

Guest Operating System: 1. Microsoft Windows Version: Windows 7

Virtual Machine Name: use the default

Disk Size:  10GB  Store virtual disk as a single file

[If you are loading from an ISO then do the following:

Customize Hardware -> Select DVD/CD -> Browse to your ISO]

Finish

Before starting the Windows 7 VM insert the Windows 7 DVD

Select: Play Virtual Machine

The first time you run VMware Player on a new kernel it builds the kernel modules (takes time)

Download and install the VMware Tools after Windows 7 is installed and running

Press CTRL-ALT to release input

Select VM -> CTRL-ALT-DEL if you need to reboot

You can delete the virtual machine and recreate it if you get stuck

Create another virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 R2

ls –l $HOME/vmware/*/*.vm* > /tmp/handson6.txt

Submit handson6.txt using Web Campus

Optional:

Download a 60-Day trial of Microsoft Office Pro 2010:
