Dell
The University system has contracted for special
pricing on Dell equipment. To qualify for the
contracted prices, computers must be ordered through Purchasing. You can
also use your P-Card to make purchases less than $2,000 by calling our
Dell Rep with your EQuote generated on Dell's Premier website (see below.)
You may find lower prices on Dell's Home or Small Business Websites
but you will pay extra for tax and shipping. In addition, Desktop
Services is unable to service computers not ordered through
purchasing. You'll need to contact Dell directly or the
place you purchaed it for service.
Contact
Kathy Schultz in purchasing for access to Dell's
Premier website.
The site provides online price quotes at our contracted rates. It
works best if you save eQuotes on the Premier website and send them
to purchasing. Purchasing can pull up the eQuote to place the order.
This helps to ensure your order is correct.

Other Brands
Our experience has been that when you purchase other brands from Costco or
the computer chains, you'll experience more trouble. This includes:
- You'll need to return the equipment to the vendor for service
- Our SysAdmins and repair staff will not be familiar with your computer and may be unable to support it
- Computers come with a one-year warranty instead of three
- Loaded with XP Home; XP Pro is needed to connect to the UNR domain
- You'll pay extra for tax and shipping
- Some Sony laptops are very difficult to upgrade and maintain
Balance the short-term savings against the extra long-term hassle.
Misc
Purchases under $2000 can be made with an individual or departmental
purchasing card.
Purchases over $2000 require a purchase order be submitted to
Purchasing.
Purchase Order Limits
When buying computers with grant money you will be charged overhead
(40%) on purchases under $2000. Purchases over $2000 are capitol equipment
and not subject to overhead. The limit rises to $5000 effective
July 1, 2007.
If your computer is more than 4 years old, you may qualify for a new
faculty
replacement computer.
IT offers refurbished PCs for $60. Get on the waitlist if you'd like one.
