Update Symantec AntiVirus

All Windows Users: Danger! Critical AntiVirus Update Alert!

Note: Version 10 of Symantec AntiVirus does not run on Windows ME or Windows 98.

Faculty: Please send this link to your grad students, research assistants, TAs, and post docs.

There is a serious security hole in the Symantec AntiVirus software we are using. This has caused Windows computers on campus to be infected by a network-carried worm which does not require user interaction to infect computers on. Therefore this is a critical update that requires immediate attention. A new version of Symantec AntiVirus needs to be installed on all computers.

To expidite the updates we are asking each user to update their computers, and to call for help if you encounter any problems or need assistance. Your help is truly appreciated.

The installation process takes about ten minutes and automatically removes the old client before installing the new one.

Install the MANAGED client on computers on the campus network, and the UNMANAGED client on laptops and home computers.

You will be asked to enter your UNR NetID and password. Be sure to enter your full NetID: user@unr.edu (not just the user part.)

To Install the UNMANAGED Client

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do I know if the update has installed properly?

A: Double-click or right-click on the yellow shield in your icon bar. The program version should be: 10.1.5.5000

Q: Why do I have to install a new version of the client?

A: Symantec Live Update only installs new virus definitions. It does not automatically update the software. This is a feature.

Q: What if my NetID does not work?

A: You may need to get your password reset. If you need your NetID password reset, please contact:

Q: What's the difference between the MANAGED and UNMANAGED clients?

A: The MANAGED client is updated by a local server called SALUS. The server is able to push updates to all the clients on campus as soon as new updates are available so your computer is protected from a new virus faster.

The UNMANAGED clients poll Symantec periodically for virus definition updates.

Q: How can I change the update schedule?

A: This option is only available for UNMANAGED clients: File -> Schedule Updates
You may want to switch from weekly to daily updates.

Q: How can I tell if I have a MANAGED client?

A: Double-click or right-click on the yellow shield in the icon bar in the lower right of your screen. If the Parent server says SALUS, you have the MANAGED client. If it's blank, you have the UNMANAGED client.

Q: What if I don't have a yellow shield in my icon bar?

Start -> All Programs -> Symantec Client Security -> Symantec AntiVirus

Q: What happens if I end up with the MANAGED client on my home machine?

A: It will try to get updates from our campus server which will fail. The campus server only provides updates to on-campus systems. Your system will not get virus updates and will be vulnerable to new attacks.

Q: Can I change from UNMANAGED to MANAGED or vice versa?

A: Yes. Contact your System Admin for help.

Q: What about the worm that got installed?

A: Click here for more information about the worm and how to remove it: W32.Spybot.ACYR

Q: What if I have a problem or question?
