Research:

My research areas cover several fields of computer science including:

Climbing Mt St Helens .... 8364ft, Mt Adams in back

6  hours up, 4 hours down, theee worst Stair Master I've ever been on ! Yes, that is the edge of the crater, a mere 2000' drop straight down

Background:

•   PhD, Computer Science, University of Idaho, Moscow Idaho, 2000
•   MS Information Systems Management, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington, 1988

Gregory L Vert, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Nevada received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Idaho.

Dr. Vert researches and publishes in several topics of bioinformatics, biometric, computer security, fuzzy logic, data visualization and spatial databases.

His work in bioinformatics includes reassembly of genomes from subsequences and extraction of related bioinformatic genomic data from widely distributed databases.

In the security area, his research and interests are in the visualization and characterization of real time attacks on computer systems and secure software development methods. He is currently developing a visual taxonomy of attacks and applies fuzzy set theory to pattern recognition of software vulnerabilities and real time attack detection.  His interests in database resolve around the creation of meta-databases that are capable of storing and managing any type of data format that has been created or will be created in the future. The application of fuzzy set theory to query support for such databases is a key component of his research.

Dr. Vert has taught a wide variety of computer science related subjects for several universities, including the University of Idaho, Portland State University and the University of Phoenix.

His credentials include fifteen years in the software industry where he worked as a software engineer, security specialist and database administrator. He is a co-designer of the worldwide database systems used by American Express in its accounts payable system and has worked for IBM, Siemens and Boeing in a variety of significant roles. His Masters degree is in Information Systems with an emphasis on software engineer.

Security / Database / Network Security Lab:

The SDN is located at UNR and is utilized for computer security, network security and database research. It is currently being
utilized for a Bioinformatics EPSCoR grant by my PhD student and been involved in Junior Faculty research grant funding
development and research.

The SDN is utilized for research in computer security that is to dangerous to be conducted in a lab that is connected to the internet. This involves worm, virus attacks and penetration testing as well as intrusion detection. Hacking tools gained from attending SANS training are utilized in this lab.

Recently SDN was involved in a covert penetration exercise to measure security vulnerability in the CSE department. The final phase of this exercise is currently being conducted.

Additionally, students from CS450 Computer Security, CPE 401 Computer Networks and CS457 are trained in the lab on
a variety of advanced techniques.  To date, approximately 60-80 students have utilized the lab at various times. The lab also provides
research resources for thirteen graduate students.

In the future the lab will be utilized for collaborative research efforts with LSU in information integrity and security.

My Graduate Students:

I am  looking  for a few graduate students. Your interests can be in one of the following areas:

If you'd like to work with me on one of the research areas below, please give me a call.

My receptionist, Missy "Hula Dawg" Vert (she's a bit of a cattle rustler !) interviews all applicants.
