Managing to Teach

Specifically, what do we need to know in order to build a classroom?

  • How many students (the smallest number that will give us viable results) ?
    • Student types (gender, race, ...)
    • There are many types of students.

General Gestures:

    • What set of 2nd life gestures can we use? SEE BELOW
    • What new set of gestures do we need to make?
      • Some ideas (will keep adding, if anyone thinks of any, please add)
  • Whisper (hand up by mouth)
  • The finger
  • One raised eyebrow
  • The "stare" (fixed gaze with arms folded)
  • Eye rolling
  • Hand raise
  • Pointing
  • Downward hand wave (get out/whatever)
  • I found some of the following at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gestures
    • Forehead slap (the duh)
    • Peace sign (take it easy)
    • Phone (call me)
    • The shocker?? (see W'pedia for exact sordid specs)
    • Air quote marks
    • Surfs up/hang loose
    • Clenched fist
    • Cheek kiss
    • Loser
    • Index finger wag

  • Native American
  • Inuit/Eskimo

Secondlife Gestures

  • Following are the 2lf gestures that are available. I've listed under each if it would be appropriate more for a teacher or student, and if applicable, when it might be used.
  • NOTE KEY: I tried to list emotions and audience for each. Ex: Gestures may be Teacher Used (TU); Student to Teacher (STT) or Student to Student (SS)
  • (Note on Gestures - Theses are simply animations that can be activated via chat, and a simple attachment can allow any animation to be used the same way)
    • Bow - Pleasure/thanks
      • SS: Student might use if he or she is class clown type and has done a really good joke,
      • STT: To teacher - if he/she is proud of misbehavior/clowning or has poked fun of teacher/students in some way.
      • TU: Teacher might ask students to take a bow if managing a performance.
    • Clap - Expresses pleasure but may also express sarcasm or group anger.
      • TU: Teacher uses as attention getter to manage whole class.
      • SS: Students obviously might clap for performances.
      • STT: On rare occaisons, when students getting really out of hand as a group, they might clap and cheer.
    • Muscle - Displays power or pride
      • SS: - Gesture probably used more commonly by male student to show off in front of other students.
    • Yes/No! - Expresses disagreement/displeasure or sometimes sarcasm.
      • SS/STT/TU: Obvious frequent use by both T/S.
    • Stretch - Show of boredom, fatigue, or displeasure.
      • STT - May be outright attempt to annoy teacher.
      • TU: Stretch commonly mistaken for hand raise by teachers.
    • Whistle - Expresses pleasure or displeasure
      • TU - some teachers use this as attention getter for whole class to express displeasure at student behavior.
      • SS - Students use more frequently as attention-getter or to express pleasure at someone's appearance. Sometimes students also try to manage class if they think they are getting loud/in trouble.
    • Afk????? No clue what this is.
    • Dance 1-8 - Expresses joy or sometimes embarrassment
      • SS: Might be used by students when misbehaving during small group work, around room etc. ***TU: Some teachers like to use the "embarrassment punishment" philosophy and might ask students to dance in this case.
    • Get lost - Expresses annoyance/anger
      • STT: Falls under "Gutsy" category - Student would tell this to a teacher if he/she had little respect for that teacher.
      • TU: Teacher might use it as a gesture to kick student out of room - to hallway or p's office for more major violations.
    • Blowkiss/Hey baby - Expresses affection or sarcasm
      • TU: Hopefully not used by teachers! (Sexual harrassment)
      • STT: Might be used to display sarcasm to teacher by students.
      • SS: Generally affection, occaisonally sarcasm (=kiss my ass).
    • Boo/Bored - obvious sign of displeasure by all
    • Chuckle - Expresses humor/amusement or sarcasm
    • STT: Students might use it to show disdain for teacher's activities, direction, or content. **SS: at antics of other students, or in making fun of anyone.
    • Cry - Expresses pain/anger/embarrassment/displeasure/sarcasm
      • SS/STT: Obvious for student.
      • TU: Teacher might use to feign being hurt by student comment. Use of sarcasm philosophy. Not generally recommended.
    • Embarrassed - Expresses pain/anger/embarrassment/displeasure/sarcasm/shyness?
      • TU: Teacher might use if he/she has said something stupid (especially common in cross-cultural classroom management).
      • STT: STudent uses when doesn't know an answer, teacher uses sarcasm etc.
    • Excuse Me - Expresses displeasure or confusion
      • TU: Teachers often use when students are working on their own and they are getting loud or out of hand. Also use if students are eavesdropping or if students say something really rude and teacher wants to give them a chance to retract it. Also may simply use to express they don't understand student questions.
      • STT: Polite way to express confusion. Gutsy: Students directly confronting teacher may also use this.
    • Hey - Expresses displeasure or confusion, also attention getter
      • STT: Similar to excuse me, however, "Hey" is something many teachers (self included) find derogatory. "Hey is for horses." Students often use innocently - especially cross-culturally - don't realize it may be considered rude.
    • Laugh - obvious for both. May express Joy or Sarcasm.
    • Looking Good - Expresses pleasure/encouragement/appreciation.
      • TU: Teacher frequently uses to express praise for good student work or behavior. Can also be considered sexually harrassing if teacher uses inappropriately regarding appearance.
      • STT: If sarcastic it's under Gutsy category. Sometimes students just use it as genuine praise for teacher.
      • SS: Generally physical. Can also be considered sexually harrassing.
    • Over here - ? I see this more as a directional command than an emotional gesture. But could also be used as expression of frustration/anger by teacher. May be used when teacher moves student seats for talking.
    • Please - expresses hope/desire/begging/exasperation and questioning (teacher)
      • TU - Would be used rarely as a gesture to sort of beg students to be quiet, get it together etc. (I'm sure I used it like, please tell me you studied? please tell me you did your homework, please tell me you were good for the sub?) Not effective management technique as please be quiet.
      • STT - Frequently used by students when they want something desperately, like to use the hall pass, or to have a test postponed, or to not have you call their parents.
    • Repulsed - expresses, uh, repulsion.
      • TU: Might be used to show disgust at student behavior/performance.
      • STT: Used to show displeasure/disgust at a teacher direction, or activity, like a pop quiz.
      • SS: Used in innocuous ways b/n students when they are poking fun at other students outfits etc. Used in serious ways when they are trying to bait other students to pick a fight.
    • Shrug - expresses confusion, boredom, unwillingness to participate, annoyance
      • TU: Usually used when teacher can't answer a question, or won't change a policy or punishment - sort of a "What do you expect me to do?"
      • STT: Often used as a barrier gesture by students who are expressing a lack of desire to participate - a "don't go there" warning to teacher. Also used to express genuine confusion. It's sometimes the equivalent of "Whatever".
      • SS: May be used to express general confusion - like if a student asks another student what the teacher said, or what they are supposed to be doing.
    • Stick tongue out - expresses displeasure, often playful
      • TU - Rare
      • STT - would be gutsy unless good relationship with teacher makes it obvious it's playful.
    • Wow- expresses surprise, pleasure, also sarcasm

Controller

  • 8-18-08: The controller has been tested running 4 avatars simultaneously without problem. I'd like to start creating the AI but I could really use some input on what functions we want it to have.

Controls

    • What set of controls does 2nd life provide?
    • What additional controls do we need to add to menu or keyboard?
      • For student avatars
      • For the student teacher avatar
    • ?
  • ?

(It looks like the controls will have to be largely text based since this is the only information I know that can be sent via client thru the server and received by another client, this should be pretty flexible and the largest bus I encountered via this scheme has been ironed out so it should work pretty well now)

Student profiles for the project. The following avatars have been created. All but one of them (Lalani - avatar won't teleport) are on our island.

       --Careful with your spelling--sjl

(Actually I've had to altar some names because there has been no last names for the original ones so I've added some middle initials or a middle name that led to a good selection of last names, also I recieved a message at the lab saying that I'd reached the maximum number of accounts that could be created by me or my "household", so I'm trying the rest from home.)

August 05, 2008

  • Since I've debugged my controller and have a basic school layout working, I was going to start Moving the new avatars onto the island. This will require getting past the tutorial island and altering their appearances to fit their student profiles.(This task may take a while given some annoyances inherent to the appearance editor)

August 18, 2008

  • I've edited some of the avatars but I'm currently just trying to make them look student like. I've collected the best free appearance edits I could find, although I'm still pretty limited on male hairstyles. If there are better descriptions of the students (ie are they supposed to be fat, tall, dressed unusually, etc) they would be pretty helpful as I'm currently stuck making pretty generic characters.

Second life Island Paradise

UNRClass

Group

Violet's Petals. You have to be a member of this group to be able to get to the Island and manipulate your environment.

Avatars

  • Anam Quandry aka Sushil Louis: King of UNRClass.
  • Violet Parnass aka Jenny Mahon: Runs the place
  • Persona Magic aka Ben Brown: Main
  • Husk Magic aka Bot
  • Huskette Sorbet aka Bot

Land Shaping

  • Land has been flattened out : 7-17-08
  • Some terraforming has been done to increase attractiveness of land

School House

  • Basic Shape is made with now working doors.
  • It's been made rather large to accommodate for camera clipping
  • Bathroom is built although any comments on it are welcome (I know stalls could use better texture)
  • Main issue in school house will be creating textures for various objects and furnishing various rooms.
  • If some objects can be found like copyable student desk with built in scripts that would be great.
  • 8-18-08: The school is mostly ready although I have to finish working on a better door that can easily be used

anywhere and which is textured better.

  • Objects like whiteboard exist but the only scripting done was done to make doors work and to control how the

avatars will sit on various objects. More scripts can be added if I'm given ideas on what objects should be made more functional and what they should do.

Group Notes

  • All listed avatars except the three from Dilworth have been invited to join Violet's Petals. 2lf could not find avatars Marcus, Veasna and Giovanni.
