STRAFE is a project to develop a game for the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE), a virtual reality technology that immerses users in a 3D world. A compelling virtual experience is created by arranging a number of large screens into a cube and projecting a stereo image to each screen. The CAVE for development is provided the Center for Advanced Visualization, Computation and Modeling (CAVCaM) at the Desert Research Institute.
STRAFE stands for Strategic Turn-based Realistic Action in a First-person Environment. As the lengthy, expanded acronym suggests, the game is a blend of turn-based and first-person gameplay where players "possess" their units in order to move around and attack.
