George Bebis George Bebis (Project Director)
Ph.D., ECE, University of Central Florida, Orlando, 1996

Prof. George Bebis completed his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996 at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL. From 1996 to 1997 he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. During the summer of 1998, he was a summer faculty visitor at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (CASC). Currently, he is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at UNR and the founder-director of the UNR Computer Vision Laboratory. He has extensive background and experience in computer vision, image processing, neural networks, pattern recognition, and genetic algorithms. In the area of computer vision, he has focused his efforts on the problem of object recognition with the goal of improving the performance of existing approaches as well as developing new approaches. Other areas of his research include face detection, face recognition, face-pose, hand-pose estimation, eye-gaze estimation, human activity recognition, surveillance, and biometrics.

Dwight Egbert Dwight Egbert (coPI)
Ph.D. EE, University of Kansas, Lawrence, 1976

Prof. Dwight Egbert is in his fifteenth year as a full-time academic engineer with the University of Nevada, Reno College of Engineering. He is currently the Director of Computer Engineering Undergraduate Programs and Director of the College of Engineering Computer Center. He has authored more than 70 original research papers and reports dealing with computer applications in computer vision, remote sensing, image processing, and neurocomputing.

Ellen Jacobson (coPI)
MBA, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, 1988

Mrs. Ellen Jacobson has been involved in undergraduate programs, both in a classroom setting and as a coordinator for undergraduate research programs, for over 20 years. This includes curriculum and special programs development for students and teachers, and providing K-16 access to the research activities within the University and Community College System of Nevada. Most recently she has participated in program evaluation and enhancement for the EPSCoR activities and undergraduate research programs on both campuses and at the Desert Research Institute.

Meggin McIntosh Meggin McIntosh (coPI)
Ph.D., Reading Education and Linguistics, University of North Texas, 1988

Dr. Meggin McIntosh is currently the Director of the Excellence in Teaching Program, a unit of Academic Affairs. Dr. McIntosh is recognized around campus and around the state as an excellent educator and has numerous awards and certificates attesting to this perception. Since 1994, prior to the creation of the Excellence in Teaching Program, Professor McIntosh offered courses for faculty on ways to improve their instruction. Her research interests include ways of helping students learn mathematics and science concepts, means to ensure that students become strategic learners, and methods of helping faculty become strategic teachers.
