USING THE PC'S IN CS 201


I. Loading Netscape

1. Double click the netscape icon on the left side of the screen

2. Netscape will load and open to the CS departments homepage

3. If you wish to view the CS 201 page, click on Faculty, then on Bebis and then on the CS201 link (underlined text)

4. You may access additional information about the department by clicking on other links

II. Formatting your Floppy Disk

1. Insert your blank and unformatted HIGH DENSITY disk in drive A.

2. Click (single click with the left mouse button) on the My Computer icon to highlight it.

3. Click on File from the menu bar at the top of the window titled My Computer.

4. Click on Format from the pull-down menu.

5. Make the following selections:

i. Capacity: 1.44Mb (3.5'') - select it from the list of choices
ii. Format type: Full - click on it with the mouse
iii. Other options:

a. Enter a Label (a name for the diskette for id purposes) - click on the Label field with the mouse and type in a label
b. Click on the mouse to force a check mark by Display summary when finished
(there should be no other check marks)

6. Click on the Start button.

7. WAIT!

Messages at the bottom of the Format window indicate the progress of the format program.
A Format Results window will eventually appear - examine it.

8. Click on the Close button in the Format Results window.

9. Click on Close in the Format window unless you wish to format another diskette in which case you simply insert another diskette into drive A, enter a new Label, and click on Start.

10. Click on File from the menu bar at the top of the My Computer window.

11. Click on Close from the pull-down menu.

III. Printing a File Using Notepad

1. Click (with the left mouse button) on the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen.

2. Click on Programs from the menu of choices.

3. Click on Accessories from the menu of choices.

4. Click on Notepad from the menu of choices.

5. Click on File from the menu bar in the Notepad window.

6. Click on Open in the pull-down menu.

7. Click on the down arrow at the right of the Look in field.

8. Click on 31/2 Floppy (A:).

9. Click on the down arrow at the right of the Files of type field.

10. Click on All Files (*.*) from the list of choices.

11. Double-click on the file to be printed (it will be loaded into the Notepad window).

12. Click on File from the menu bar in the Notepad window.

13. Click on Print from the pull-down menu.

14. When you are finished printing files you need to close the Notepad window (click on the small button label with an X in the upper right-hand corner of the window).

III. Loading Turbo C++ Version 4.5

When you begin your session the machine will probably be running a program called Windows 95. Proceed as follows to load TURBO C++ Version 4.5:

1. Double click on the TURBO icon on the left side of the screen

2. TURBO C++ will start presenting you with a window and a menu bar

3. All work should be saved on D:\temp until the end of the session, at which time it must be coppied to a floppy disk

IV. Quitting Turbo C++

1. Click (with the left mouse button) on File.

2. Click on Quit.

3. If an Error window appears, simply click on OK.

The computer will return to Windows 95.
