Q. How many partners should I have?

A. Ideally 2. Only in exceptional cases you can do the project alone or have more than 2 partners. Past experience has suggested 2 is the ideal and plus

you can learn how to work as a team. Remember, I will be working with you as your partner besides being the external project guide.

 

Q. Which complier do we use?

A. Visual C++ 6.0 or Visual Studio .NET if you are working on windows platform.

If you are working on Linux, then gcc is the preferred compiler.

 

Q. Do I need to know VC++ to use Visual C++ compiler or .NET?

A. NO. You don’t have to know MFC or C++ to use the Visual Studio 6.0 or .Net to use the compiler.

 

Q. What software or tools do I need to get started?

A. 1. VC++ compiler.

    2. Matlab 6.0+ (latest is 6.5) if you are going to involve research.

    3. Miktex if you want to use Latex for your reports/ MS word for your reports.

    4. Ghostview for viewing .ps files

    5. Acrobat Reader 6.0+ to read .pdf files.

 

Optional Software Packages

    6. Microsoft Visio for flow chart and timeline.

    7. Beyond Compare ver 2.0 (to compare diff versions of the same file)

 

Q. Which search engine should I use?

A. My preferred search engine is Google.

 

Q. Where should I look for research papers?

A. Use Google. Citeseer by NEC has most of the good papers online.

 

Q. Do I have to work on project during PL?

A. NO. PL is for studying your other subjects and not doing project.

 

Q. Do I have to work in the holidays during Christmas?

A. YES that’s when you will make most of the progress. Holidays are the best time to catch up.

 

Q. What’s the time difference between Reno and Pune?

A. The time difference between reno and pune is 12.5 hours. So if its 10 pm in pune..its 9:30 am here the same day.

The difference is 13.5 hours when there is daylight savings. I am in the PST time zone and usually works out good

since India day time is my night time.

 

Q. Image Processing has no market and it’s difficult to get a job. Is that true?

A. Maybe in India. Entirely opposite in US. Especially after 911 Computer Vision and Image Processing are H O T.

Listen to your inner voice. If you hear IP go all out for it with no turning back. Reading magazines like spectrum will help u in making a better decision.

Bottom line is you should do what you like to do and do it with a passion. In fact if the market is not that fully developed, it

gives you room to create room for yourself and create a market for your needs. Be a leader and let the market follow you!

Q. What are the prerequisites for doing research?

A. I don’t believe in the marks based system. So I don’t care whether your higher second class or first class. The prerequisites for doing research are

  2. Hard Work
  3. Desire to succeed.
  4. Confidence

Even if you are not good at programming you can start with MATLAB.
