Graduate Program Application
Overview
The Graduate Program in the Department of Computer Science processes a
number of applications for admission and financial aid every semester. The
Graduate Program also needs to keep track of current graduate students and
their progress. The goal of this project is to implement a graduate program
application that makes it easier for the graduate committee, management
assistants, students, and faculty to process and track graduate students
from the time they apply till they graduate; and then hand over relevant
information to the alumni application.
Completed graduate applications are received from two sources 1) The Office of International Students and
Scholars and 2) The Graduate
School. Currently, members of the graduate committee sequentially look
at graduate applications (hardcopy) and make a recommendation on acceptance
or rejection to the graduate director. The graduate director makes a
recommendation to the graduate school, which then sends a letter to the
applicant informing him or her of the decision.
We would like the following features:
- Users track an application's status on the web. Here, security is a
major concern, for example, we do not want to give an applicant access
to other applicants' data.
- Members of the graduate committee should be able to evaluate
applications simultaneously. It may not be possible to eliminate hardcopy
applications, but you need to give thought to whether this is possible in
the future.
- Members of the graduate committee and the management staff should be
able to view applicants' status.
- Faculty should be able to view a student's progress.
- The graduate committee should be able to add to the FAQ on the
graduate program web page by sending email to a particular account
(gradfaq@cs.unr.edu). That is, when we answer (by email) a question
about our graduate program, sending a copy of this reply to
gradfaq@cs.unr.edu should automatically add the question and answer to
the graduate program's FAQ on the graduate program's web page.
-
A student's advisor and the graduate director need to be notified if a
student is not making progress or is in danger of being dismissed.
This depends on the courses that the student is taking, his/her grades,
and whether these are core courses.
- Information about the graduate program in the Dept. of Computer
Science at UNR is at
http://www.cs.unr.edu/grad/ . Consider the information there an
appendix to this requirements specification.
