Most people have never heard of the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth or the men in it. Even Robert Gould Shaw is a name that does not ring any bells to the average person. Certainly not like "Robert E. Lee", "U.S. Grant", or "Stonewall Jackson." From the start, portrayals have focused on Robert Gould Shaw. One of the reasons for this could be that his is the only name that can really be associated with the regiment, as with any regiment or force, it is the leader that gets the recognition. In addition, the flag has played an important role in the poetry and artwork of the regiment. The fact that black men were fighting and dying for it was an incredible thing for the advancement of justice in America and that was often discussed. Now onto the tour... |
