Dal with Spinach
Thank Mom. This is a family recipe.
- Ingredients
- 1 cup Moong Dal
- 1 bag (16 ounces, I believe) fresh Spinach
- 2 teaspoons salt or according to taste as my mom pointed out.
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 green chili, split in half (or two if you feel like it (or three (or four)))
- 2 teaspoons of freshly ground cumin seeds (Freshly ground makes a significant difference)
- My mom is talking about adding milk because some friend from Sri Lanka told her it is good, and she likes it.
So 2 tablespoons of milk.
- Curry leaves would be good, if I knew how to say what it is in English or Latin. I would suggest going to an Indian store and asking for Curry Patha (which means Curry Leaves in Hindi).
Preparation
Pressure cook the dal and spinach. Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
(dont' complain about missing ingredients) before you start the
pressured cooking. Pressure cook for five minutes after it
starts hissing loudly. If your pressure cooker is different,
pressure cook until the first pressure release (one
whistle?). Don't forget the salt.
Add crushed cumin to dal spinach mix and heat for 60000 milliseconds.
Fry onion with chili in tablespoon of oil. Add to dal and spinach mix.
Heat until hot and serve.
