BP-ENDURE at the University of Nevada

Project Summary The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) proposes to increase the number of well-trained, highly qualified neuroscientists in the field. Students may not be aware of research careers in neuroscience, yet the field needs all bright minds to join the talent pool. We propose efforts to broaden participation in the service of stronger science and to ensure a wide, deep workforce pipeline. UNR is the land grant university of Nevada and is an R1 institution with a strong tradition of educating students whose access to higher education historically has been limited. Our primary partner and neighbor institution, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) has an outstanding record of preparing students to transition to upper-level undergraduate education at UNR. In our initial funding period, we established the successful framework of the Nevada ENDURE program. The Nevada ENDURE program facilitates an intensive two-year training program for 12 trainees per year. During the academic year, trainees conduct mentored research in labs at UNR and participate in weekly professional development and skills training seminars at UNR. Each summer, trainees participate in summer research programs at our educational partner institutions: the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis, the University of Michigan, Stanford University.
